A protector with no one left to protect, Wukong torments any creatures who dare traverse within the Elderwood's depths. After the Coven destroyed his village in search of his enchanted staff's limitless power, he learned that trust is a fool's luxury. The gleam from his weapon's crystals serve as a constant reminder of the ancient trickster's failure.

The Knights of the Emerald Chapel are the once-human stewards of the Elderwood—men and women who swore an oath to the land itself, and in return were granted unnaturally long life. Now led by a man named Taric, a handful reside there still, protecting the forest from all manner of invaders.

Deep within the Elderwood, ancient beings lie in wait, hidden from man. They protect the enchanted forest, punishing trespassers and inspiring tales across the land. However, as horrors of the outside world spread, the defenders struggle to maintain their strongholds against humanity's malicious curiosity.

In the beginning, the Old Gods reigned. So great was humankind's love for them that one dared to make them a part of her flesh forever. She devoured the sun itself and, descending from that empty heaven, inspired her knights to decimate all those that remained. Centuries later, they stand, the only hope against the rising Coven's darkness.

A small number of the Elderwood's children remain largely unaffected by the growing influence of the Coven, to the relief of scholars and storytellers alike. Unfortunately, those particular children are some of the most whimsical and dangerous, including among their number the insane goblin Veigar and his cursed, hallucinogenic toadstools.
